National research programme Spintronics (PEPR SPIN)

Powering the digital transition with spintronics

Faced with the growing energy footprint of digital technology, the SPIN research programme supports the transition to more energy-efficient, agile and sustainable technologies. By supporting research in spintronics, it aims to anticipate a new generation of electronic components that will drive scientific, industrial and societal innovation.

  • Exploration national research programme
  • Programme leaders: CEA, CNRS
  • Programme directors:
    • Vincent Cros - CNRS (Laboratoire Albert Fert)
    • Lucian Prejbeanu - CEA
  • Budget: €38m
  • Duration: 8 years (2023 to 2031)

At the crossroads of condensed matter physics, innovative materials, and electronics, the field of spintronics studies and exploit a quantum property of electrons, spin, to design more energy-efficient and agile devices. Faced with the challenges of the energy cost of digital technology, particularly with the explosion of AI, it offers breakthrough solutions to reduce the environmental impact of digital technology.

Scientific discoveries in spintronics have already revolutionized areas such as information storage, sensors, and non-volatile memories, and are targeting strategic fields such as communication, computing, artificial intelligence, security, health, and more in the future. It paves the way for disruptive technologies that are better suited to the digital demands of tomorrow.

From a socio-economic perspective, Spintronics represents a strategic lever for industry and technological sovereignty in electronics in France and Europe. By structuring an integrated national sector, the SPIN program promotes innovation, the establishment of a national network of technology platforms for the development of new materials, and the creation of skilled jobs. Ultimately, spintronics could thus contribute to a less energy-intensive digital
