National research programme Decarbonisation of the industry (PEPR SPLEEN)
Reshaping industry to achieve carbon neutrality
In response to the climate emergency, the SPLEEN research programme aims to support a profound transformation of French industry in order to drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. It mobilises research to design disruptive technologies, supporting the transition to a more carbon-efficient, resilient and competitive industry, while strengthening the country’s technological sovereignty.

The SPLEEN programme brings together scientific communities around four complementary areas of research: new prediction and monitoring tools, integration of low-carbon energies and efficiency, processes decarbonisation and intensification, and CO₂ capture, storage and recovery. It draws on a variety of disciplines such as chemistry, process engineering, artificial intelligence and social sciences to assess technological and territorial trajectories.
The advances targeted will make it possible, for example, to transform CO₂ into fuels or materials, develop electrified or flexible industrial processes, integrate solar energy into production chains, and make better use of waste heat.
The expected benefits are significant, both for the environment and the economy: reduction of industrial emissions, creation of new technological sectors, adaptation of territories, skilled jobs, and strategic positioning in the energy transition markets.
