National research programme Nature-based Solutions (PEPR SOLU-BIOD)
Deploying Nature-based Solutions to adapt our territories
To tackle the climate crisis and biodiversity collapse, the SOLU-BIOD research programme proposes to draw on the functional capacities of ecosystems. By structuring ambitious research around Nature-based Solutions (NbS), it aims to generate new knowledge, co-develop concrete actions involving the scientific community and local stakeholders, evaluate the effectiveness of these actions, and encourage their widespread adoption. The objective is to develop innovative and sustainable responses that benefit society, the economy and the environment.

Nature-based Solutions rely on the ability of ecosystems to provide essential services, such as climate regulation, protection against natural hazards, and improvement of quality of life. The programme therefore draws on a variety of scientific fields—ecology, social sciences, modelling, evolutionary genetics—to better understand, design and adapt these solutions in a context of global change.
There are many applications: greening cities to mitigate heat islands, restoring coastlines against erosion, and creating wetlands to improve water management. These actions, designed on a large scale and in connection with local biodiversity, meet essential needs.
Beyond the environmental benefits, NbS represent a lever for innovation and economic attractiveness. By structuring a new field of expertise, they promote the emergence of sustainable jobs, support local dynamics and contribute to the evolution of our development models.
