The 'Autonomy' (ageing and disability) PPR

Supporting autonomy throughout life

In response to demographic and social changes linked to ageing and disability, the Autonomy research programme aims to renew understanding and policies in this area. Its objective is to provide scientific and practical responses to the challenges of support, while structuring an interdisciplinary research community
at national level.

  • National Research Programme
  • Programme leader: CNRS
  • Programme directors :
    • Vincent Caradec - CNRS (Centre de Recherches « Individus, Épreuves, Sociétés » (CeRIES))
    • Gildas Brégain - CNRS (ARENES)
  • Budget : €30m
  • Duration: 8 years (2021 to 2029)

This programme draws on a wide range of disciplines – humanities and social sciences, engineering sciences, health – in order to address autonomy in all its complexity. The work focuses on defining and measuring this concept, designing and implementing public policies, analysing concrete experiences of empowerment or loss of independence, and designing and using innovative devices.

Supporting autonomy throughout life in the French context refers to a variety of means and instruments to support people’s autonomy (in the double meaning of agency and independence in everyday life) like allowances, services, and technologies, but also adapting people’s environment in the private and the public spheres, supporting carers, etc. By structuring research on autonomy in a sustainable manner, the programme aims to inform public decisions, widely disseminate the knowledge produced and propose concrete solutions for a more inclusive and supportive society.
