National research programme Risks (PEPR IRiMa)

Building more resilient societies to global environmental risks

A In a context marked by accelerating climate change, the impacts of human activities on ecosystems, and the growing frequency and severity of disasters, societies are confronted with risks that are increasingly systemic and interdependent. The Risks research programme is mobilizing to coordinate the national research effort on risks and to develop innovative tools and methodologies to enhance risk prevention, preparedness,
and management. Its ambition is to structure an integrated risk science that supports a national strategy adapted to the challenges posed by global environmental change.

  • Exploration national research programme
  • Programme leaders: BRGM, CNRS, Université Grenoble Alpes
  • Programme directors:
    • Soraya Boudia - CNRS (Centre de Recherche Médecine, Sciences, Santé, Santé Mentale, Société (CERMES 3))
    • Gilles Grandjean - BRGM
    • Didier Georges - Université Grenoble Alpes
  • Budget : €51,9m
  • Duration: 8 years (2023 to 2031)

To respond to the growing number and interlinking of natural, technological, and environmental risks and their cascading effects, IRiMa promotes and brings together research in geosciences, engineering, digital sciences, and the humanities and social sciences.

Its research enables the design of new tools for observation, analysis, modeling, representation, and training for risk anticipation, prevention, and management. These scientific and technological advances reinforce decision-making capacities for public authorities and crisis-management stakeholders, while also contributing to the empowerment of citizens and communities striving for greater resilience.

The programme contributes to a collective response to future crises. It promotes better coordination between scientific knowledge and public action, supports the adaptation of territories and contributes to the construction of a more resilient and cohesive society.
