National research programme Sustainable city (PEPR VDBI)

Shaping tomorrow’s sustainable territories together

In response to environmental and social crises, the VDBI research programme aims to structure a collective and interdisciplinary approach, closely rooted in the needs of territories, to accelerate the transition to sustainable cities and smart buildings. By mobilising researchers, public actors, businesses, professional sectors and citizens, it aims to remove the persistent obstacles in the implementation of more resilient, inclusive andsustainable urbanisation.

  • Acceleration national research programme
  • Programme leaders: CNRS, Université Gustave Eiffel
  • Programme directors:
    • Gilles Gesquière - CNRS (Laboratoire d'informatique en image et systèmes d'information (LIRIS))
    • Dominique Mignot - Université Gustave Eiffel
    • Anne Ruas - Université Gustave Eiffel
  • Budget: €40 million
  • Duration: 8 years (2023 to 2031)
  • Prematuration-maturation consortia: DDM and Sci-Ty

Backed by research based on real-world issues, VDBI combines contributions from environmental and health sciences, humanities and social sciences, and engineering sciences. Six major challenges guide this approach, ranging from climate change to urban resilience, sobriety, inclusion and health, while also addressing emerging and understudied issues.

The programme encourages better urban planning, more informed public decisions and concrete innovations in construction, development and the improvement of living environments for all. By bringing together experts, businesses and local authorities, a real dynamic on the ground is created to bring about sustainable change in our territories.

At the heart of this approach are key issues: preparing cities for climate change, reducing urban disparities and sustainably improving the living environment. By consolidating committed scientific and technical communities, VDBI is helping to build more sustainable, inclusive and resilient territories capable of facing current and future challenges.
