National research programme Artificial intelligence (PEPR IA)

Unleashing breakthrough technologies in artificial intelligence

AI is now a critical element of sovereignty, at the heart of key issues of industrial competitiveness and performance. In response to these challenges, the AI research programme is being rolled out to foster major scientific advances, while ensuring that AI is more sober, safer and fairer. The aim is to bring together researchers, manufacturers and talented individuals to position France at the forefront of AI research.

  • Acceleration national research programme
  • Programme leaders : CEA, CNRS, Inria
  • Programme directors :
    • Massih-Reza Amini - CNRS (Laboratoire d'informatique de Grenoble (LIG))
    • François Terrier - CEA
    • Karteek Alahari - Inria
  • Budget: €73m
  • Budget: 6 years (2023 to 2029)

This programme draws on a wide range of disciplines – computer science, mathematics, physics and engineering – to explore three complementary areas: frugal and embedded AI, trusted and distributed AI, and the mathematical foundations of AI. The AI programme focuses on overcoming scientific barriers related to energy and data frugality, distributed learning security and algorithm transparency. French mathematical excellence plays a central role, opening up new perspectives for modelling and optimising AI architectures.

In terms of applications, the programme will enable the design of integrated AI systems that are energy-efficient and adaptable to constrained environments (sensors, connected objects, embedded systems), as well as ‘trusted’ AI solutions for critical uses (health, transport, environment, industry).

On a socio-economic level, this programme aims to enhance the attractiveness of French research and promote the transfer of fundamental research results to businesses, particularly start-ups, and to citizens. By structuring a dynamic ecosystem, it helps prepare French industry for technological change, while ensuring the ethical and sustainable use of AI.
